We Appreciate Our Military! Veteran’s Day Freebies and Discounts
On Sunday — Nov. 11 — America will honor its military veterans, past and present. The tradition started in 1919.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 a day of “solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory” in World War I.
Locally this week, more than 60 Howard County businesses – from restaurants, auto dealers and photography studios to jewelers and hairstylists – will offer discounts for veterans. Last year, 70 businesses participated.
About 8,000 Howard County residents are military veterans, according to the local Disabled American Veterans chapter. We join the Golden Corral, Half Moon Restaurant and Brewery and the other participating businesses in thanking our family members and neighbors who served in the U.S. military.

There are plenty of Veterans Day free meals to be had this year nationwide, as well as some other additional discounts on items other than food. You’ll be able to stop into any of the restaurants below on or around Veterans Day this year to get your free meal.
Tip: Pay close attention to the date listed and what you need to bring so you qualify for the free meal. They don’t all take place on Veterans Day (Sunday, November 11, 2012 but observed on Monday, November 12, 2012) and some require different forms of identification.
Tip: Some of these Veterans Day free meals are nationwide but some are only at participating locations. Please call the restaurant you plan on visiting before you leave home to make sure they are taking part.
