Kokomo’s Memorial Gym to Undergo Major Renovations & New Additions
Will Be Home to IU Kokomo Cougars
Indiana University Kokomo, Kokomo-Center Schools and the City of Kokomo will partner on a project to renovate Kokomo High School’s historic Memorial Gymnasium. Beginning with the 2013-14 athletic season, Memorial Gym will be the permanent home court for all IU Kokomo women and men’s basketball and women’s volleyball games.
“Upon approval by the Kokomo-Center Schools Board of School Trustees, this project will provide IU Kokomo with a permanent home for their indoor athletics,” Kokomo-Center Schools Superintendent Jeff Hauswald said. “This is a win-win-win partnership among Kokomo Schools, IU Kokomo, and the City of Kokomo that will attract more events to downtown Kokomo while helping renovate and preserve a downtown landmark.”
The gym’s unused swimming pool facilities will be transformed into a college regulation basketball court that could also accommodate large meetings and special events. Plans call for a dedicated entrance from Superior St. and signage to the IU Kokomo gymnasium
“Memorial Gym events currently bring thousands of visitors. IU Kokomo athletics is attracting a new set of visitors to Kokomo who attend college sporting events,” said Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight. “This partnership between IU Kokomo and Kokomo-Center Schools will enable our community to host more athletic events.”
“IU Kokomo has graduated more than 10,000 students,” said IU Kokomo Interim Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke. “80 percent remain in the Kokomo area. As our campus grows, we want to ensure our students have a positive collegiate experience that will reinforce their commitment to our local community in the future.”
The City of Kokomo will enhance adjacent pedestrian approaches by adding crosswalks, street lamps and wider sidewalks and create green spaces to improve appearance the area.
