No — Fannie Mae HomeStyle does not permit DIY work in the renovation escrow. All financed improvements must be completed by licensed, insured contractors so draws, inspections, and liability stay auditable.
HomeStyle renovation dollars sit in escrow after closing. The lender releases funds when inspections confirm work matches the approved bids. That model breaks if the borrower is both the recipient and the unverified labor source.
Appraisers also need credible contractor scopes to value after-improved condition. Verbal DIY plans do not support underwriting or draw schedules.
